Q: Enjoying following your progress on Vimeo, although slightly jealous as currently injured so not running at moment. Do you know if Chi running have much to say about downhill running? I tend to find trying to relaxing, holding arms out for balance and look several steps ahead works. But in transitioning to a forefoot landing I found it difficult to do that whilst worrying about my running form.
A: In my minimal experience with running downhill I agree that it’s extremely difficult to worry about your form when giving it everything you got to not take a spill and roll down the hill. From what I’ve learned, Chi Running actually suggests a heel to toe strike when going down a steep heel (this is the only time they suggest this). They also suggest keeping your arms relaxed and at your side, shortening your stride, increasing your cadence, and zigzagging to reduce overall impact. Looking ahead a few steps should definitely help as well!
